Aspect Ratio FAQ: Formulas & Conversions

What is aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height of a screen or image. It's expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9). Common ratios include 16:9 (widescreen), 21:9 (ultrawide), 4:3 (standard), and 1:1 (square).
How do I calculate aspect ratio from width and height?
Divide the width by the height, then find the greatest common divisor (GCD) to simplify. For example, 1920÷1080 = 1.777... The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120, so 1920/120 : 1080/120 = 16:9.
What is the most common aspect ratio for videos?
16:9 is the most common aspect ratio for modern video content, used by YouTube, Netflix, and most streaming platforms. For vertical mobile video (TikTok, Reels), 9:16 is standard.
What aspect ratio is 1920x1080?
1920×1080 pixels (Full HD or 1080p) has an aspect ratio of 16:9. This is the most widely used resolution for monitors, TVs, and video content.
How do I convert aspect ratio to pixels?
Multiply the aspect ratio values by a common factor. For 16:9 at 1080p height: width = (16/9) × 1080 = 1920. For any target dimension, use our calculator's 'New Dimension' mode.
What is the difference between 16:9 and 16:10?
16:9 (1.778:1) is wider and more common for video content. 16:10 (1.6:1) is slightly taller, preferred for productivity as it shows more vertical content. MacBooks use 16:10.
What is the aspect ratio formula?
The aspect ratio formula is: Aspect Ratio = Width ÷ Height. To calculate dimensions: Width = Height × Ratio, or Height = Width ÷ Ratio. For example, for 16:9 with height 1080: Width = 1080 × (16÷9) = 1080 × 1.778 = 1920 pixels.
What aspect ratio is best for Instagram and TikTok?
Instagram feed posts use 1:1 (square) or 4:5 (portrait). Instagram Stories and Reels use 9:16 (1080×1920). TikTok videos use 9:16 vertical format. For Instagram carousels, 1:1 at 1080×1080 pixels works best.
